Columbus has a year-round abundance of big events, and summer is a great season to take part. From fireworks that color the night sky to music that fills the evening air, Columbus has some great gathering spots in July and early August. Here’s a look at three of the biggest, most boisterous events for you and your family to enjoy.

Red, White & Boom

It’s back and bigger than ever! This annual event is once again live and taking place on July 1 in downtown Columbus. This is the 40th annual version of the event, which always ends in a gargantuan fireworks display at Genoa Park. This big event also includes a street festival which starts at 11 a.m. featuring food vendors, breweries, business vendors and fun activities for the kids.

There’s also a nighttime parade – starting at 5:30 p.m. – that takes place from the Main Street Bridget to Spring Street. Live music is also featured at two downtown stages. Get all the details at the event website.

Picnic with the Pops

The stirring Columbus Symphony hosts its evening series at Columbus Commons every summer, featuring great rock and pop artists with theme nights that are fun for the music lover. You can pack a picnic dinner and enjoy it as the music flows throughout the big park.

This July’s lineup features some diverse sounds. It starts with Patriotic Pops on July 2, the annual event that features American favorites, as well as famous scores from film composer John Williams. The biggest name is Christopher Cross, the ‘80s pop-rock hitmaker who is known for “Arthur’s Theme,” “Sailing” and “Ride Like the Wind.” He performs on July 16. See the full schedule at the symphony’s site.

Ohio State Fair

This year’s fair takes place from July 27 to Aug. 7 at the Ohio Expo Center and Stair Fairgrounds. What you’ll see there includes live music performances, a midway with rides and games, food and drink galore, and all the competitions and attractions you can possibly visit.

Among this year’s biggest names at the fair is country legend Willie Nelson, rapper Ice Cube, classic rockers Foreigner and country star Toby Keith. Find out everything there is to see at the fair by visiting its website.
